A lot of people have! We all know about green plastic army men. Most of us play with the little green toy soldiers too. But, their history is rarely explored.

That’s a shame, because the origin story of plastic army men is full of intriguing struggles, triumphs, and trivia!

In this post, you’ll learn all about the history of army men. You’ll also find out how their origins are intertwined with the creation of toy soldiers from the past.

How Toy Soldiers Gave Birth To Army Men

Before plastic army men of the modern age, there were tin toy soldiers.

Various cheap metals and alloys made tin toy soldiers. Some examples include tin, lead, zinc, or antimony.

But toy soldiers have fascinated collectors since ancient times. They trace back to the era of the Pharaohs in ancient Egypt.

Those first toy soldiers were crafted from materials like wood, stone, clay, and metal. They were reserved for the affluent.

However, it was only in the late 18th century that the first “real” toy figures, known as military miniatures, saw the advent of mass production.

Petite lead figures standing at approximately 2 inches tall were crafted in limited quantities by the Parisian company “Mignot”. They were adorned in colorful uniforms and possessed an undeniable charm.

However, their allure was tempered by their high cost, preventing widespread popularity.

Despite this, other manufacturers, including the German firm “Heyde,” entered the scene, leading to the establishment of a market catering to the well-to-do by the conclusion of the 19th century.

Tin toy soldiers surged to popularity in the late 19th century! Germany became the leading producer of tin toy soldiers, followed by England and France. Tin toy soldiers came in 3 distinct styles.

There were solid soldiers – or “3D” figures. Next were the flats, which were paper-thin, almost 2D looking figures. Finally, the semi-soldiers, which were something between the former categories.

Later, companies made their solid soldiers hollow. This resulted in a lighter weight figure. It also decreased the cost and increased its accessibility.

Toy makers always focused on current and historical armies.

This is true even from the beginning, with the earliest toy soldiers. 18th century toy soldiers featured armies from ancient Egypt to Victorian era armies.

(Funny enough, what they considered “current” back then is now considered “historical!”)

The artists often painted these tin toy soldiers in bright, glossy colors. Then, they got sold in boxes, with about 6 to 8 footmen to a box set. Sometimes, accessories got included in these box sets.

You could expect to find wagons, cannons, engineering equipment with your toy soldiers.

You could also discover bridges, fortifications, and buildings in your set! Some even crafted from the shiny embrace of tin, or the whimsy of wood composition and paper mâché.

Shortly before the dawn of the 20th century, the English firm “William Britains” revolutionized the landscape by introducing a more affordable line of hollow cast leads.

These figures, maintaining a height of about 2 ¼ inches (still adhering to industry standards), finally gained traction among children.

Depicting armies of England, America, France, Germany, and their adversaries, these “little men” became a cultural phenomenon.

Noteworthy people like Winston Churchill and H.G. Wells were avid toy soldier collectors.

They were captured in old photographs playing with armies of Britains toy soldiers on their rugs and lawns.

What Scales & Sizes Do Toy Soldiers Come In?

For the scales of toy soldiers, things get kinda confusing.

They come in all kinds of different scales, shapes, and sizes. Don’t worry though, because we’ll break it down simple for you.

The height and size of toy soldiers are measured in two ways.

First is their millimeter scale height.

54mm, for example, is the standard height of army men.

You measure a figure the same way you’d measure a person – from their feet to the top of their head. It means the figure stands at 54 millimeters tall!

Next is the size scale ratio.

The standard scale ratio for army men is 1:32 (or 1/32).

This means that the figure is 1/32, the size of its real-life counterpart. That means you would have to multiply the size of a 1:32 scale army man by 32 times to match the size of a real soldier!

From the beginning until now, toy soldiers stand at 2 to 3 inches tall, on average. Toy soldier companies established the average height of a trooper since the beginning.

An English company called “Britain’s Limited” helped standardize the size of the common toy soldier. They are the primary contributor to the standardized toy soldier scale system.

Thanks to them, the standard size for an army man tends to be around 2 to 3 inches, or roughly 54 millimeters.

Smaller miniatures appeared among producers, too. These miniature figures stood at roughly 28-32 millimeters, and got deployed for war-gaming.

Afterward, 28-32mm (1:64 scale) became the standard for tabletop war-gaming toy soldiers. One example is Warhammer 40k by Games Workshop.

Although Warhammer 40k doesn’t have an official scale, they are accepted as coming in 28mm, 30mm, and 32mm. We’re now seeing an increase in the standard size of war-gaming miniatures.

The new standard size for wargaming miniatures is becoming 40mm sized figures, or 1:48 scale toy soldiers. What’s the main scale you use for toy soldiers? Tell us in comments below!

The History Of Toy Soldiers

People have been producing toy soldiers since ancient times, as stated above.

But the United States only began producing toy soldier figures since the start of World War 1! They had a lot of catching up to do. American toy soldier companies focused on scales ranging from 45mm to 90mm.

Among the produced troops were civil war era soldiers, plus cowboys and Indians.

Random vehicles of inaccurate scale are also common. Soon enough, spacemen, aliens, gangsters, and foreign soldiers got added to the mix. These miniatures range from solids to semi-solids.

One of the most popular toy soldiers ever produced was a figure from New Jersey.

They’re known as “pod foot” soldiers. Their feet had a special design – a hollow round shape, which allowed the toy soldiers to stand! These soldiers were World War 2 era figures.

They came with a plethora of marching and fighting troopers.

Why Are Toy Soldiers Made Of Plastic?

In the 1940s to the 1950s, concerns about lead poisoning grew among the public. Toy soldier manufacturing methods changed because of these growing concerns.

These were welcome changes because of the newfound availability of plastic. The wondrous invention known as plastic gained popularity during the middle of WW2!

After the war, there was a surplus of plastic, both hard and soft. This plastic surplus enabled toy soldier companies to make safer toys at lower costs. Thus, “army men” were born!

You might be wondering, what’s the difference between “army men” and “toy soldiers?”

It’s important to remember, army men are a certain kind of toy soldier. They are made of plastic, and designed to be cheap toys.

Remember this analogy: every husky is a dog, but not all dogs are huskies. Every army man is a toy soldier, but not all toy soldiers are army men.

Some toy soldier companies reproduced their old lead figures in plastic.

Those cheap plastic figures started getting sold by the bundle in plastic bags! Timmee Toys, a producer of popular US infantry army men, uses the same cast molds as old lead figures.

Other toy soldier companies designed and produced original figures.

Plastic was, and still is, a major upgrade from tin and other earth metals once used to produce toy soldiers. First, it’s way cheaper. Next, it allows for more intricate details on toy soldiers.

Thus, newer toy soldiers became more detailed and realistic as the generations went on.

In the USA, during the 1940s and 1950s, manufacturers produced the first plastic army men. They were replicas of lead figures, or new miniatures reflecting the contemporary military.

What Do Army Men Look Like? (Then & Now)

US troops got molded in various shades of green. They sported M1 rifles, .45 caliber pistols, and Thompson submachine guns, for starters. Some soldiers sported BARs, M3 grease guns, bazookas, grenades, and flamethrowers.

These are still the second most common plastic army men in the modern day. They’re fit for duty in the battlefields of WW2 era Europe, Korea, and the Pacific.

The absolute number one most common plastic army men of today are Vietnam era soldiers. They have barebones kits, consisting only of their M16 rifle. They sometimes replace their M16 with a bazooka, flamethrower, or radio.

These figures are being produced by TimMee Toys. They also are the inspiration for the army men we see in the Pixar movie, Toy Story. If you walk into the grocery store and head for the toy aisle, you’ll likely find a bag of these guys for sale.

For instance, there are TimMee recasts and Ideal’s ring-hand soldiers. There’s also a soldier with flat feet and no stands, made by Marx. Knock off toy soldiers like these would stand between 40mm and 54mm.

These army men were once available in every single store in America. Gas station, grocery store, convenience store, it didn’t matter – you’d be able to find a bag of army men with ease.

Nowadays, army men are usually only sold in toy soldier stores, or general toy stores. You may also run into them in the toy aisle of a grocery store, if you’re lucky.

But no matter where you bought your army men from, you’d always get troops, flags, and vehicles in your plastic play bag. The plastic play bag often contained jeeps, trucks, half-tracks, cannons, and tanks.

Who Produces Toy Soldiers?

Various companies have been producing toy soldiers and army men, from their origins until now. Currently, the majority of army men get produced in Taiwan or Hong Kong.

The most popular army men to date are off-brand knock offs. For every 1 original army man, there are 1000 knock-off clones made. This has been true since the 1950s!

In the early days of modern toy soldier production, a few dedicated companies emerged.

Some of the largest toy manufacturers produced their own “name brand” line of toy soldiers.

Louis Marx Inc. was the leading emerging brand. They were a large toy manufacturer that also explored electric trains. Marx sold their toy soldiers in small bags or large play sets.

The larger sets included army men, equipment, structures, defensive fortifications, and vehicles.

The following list shows the most popular Marx sets:

• WW2 Battlegrounds – My personal favorite, which featured the USA versus Germany during WW2.
• Civil War Battle – A play set featuring blue union troopers facing off against grey confederate troopers.
• Fort Apache Play set – A wild west themed army men play set.
• The Alamo – A specific army men play set that featured the Alamo. Army men play sets which feature Alamo soldiers are quite rare.
• Knights & Vikings – A historically inaccurate play set featuring ancient army men.

All those play sets included lithographed stamped metal structures.

The manufacturer assembled and fitted these structures with plastic parts. One structure was a castle. It had plastic tower battlements, a gate, and a drawbridge. Fort Apache was a plastic fort with a metal barracks. The Alamo consisted almost entirely of stamped metals.

Another toy company, named Ideal Toys, produced their own line of army men play sets. Multiple Products Corporation (MPC) also produced army men.

Their soldiers offered rare ring-hand troops. MPC was unique because they sold their toy soldiers separate from their weapons. This meant you could arm any soldier with whatever weapon you wished.

Both Ideal Toys and MPC also offered a variety of toy soldiers to choose from. Their options for eras included Civil War, WW2, Modern Times, Wild West, and space.

Marx had more refined play sets compared to Ideal & MPC. Still, they provided kids with everything they needed for playing war.

The Evolution Of Army Men (The Rise, Fall, & Renaissance Timeline)

Starting in the 1960s, a new form of Army Man found itself among the ranks of toy soldiers.

This was the generic “modern” US soldier, armed and equipped with the latest gear for that time era. That included the M-16 Assault rifle. Like all other army men, manufacturers sold these new army men in bag sets, including a tank, jeep, or sandbags.

The mid-1960s saw the complete integration of this new type of Toy Soldier.

This modern army man with an M-16 Rifle represented American Vietnam troops.

Manufacturers continue to produce them to this very day. These modern army men eclipse many of the older types of toy soldiers.

Some toy soldier manufacturers were fading out of the industry around this time. Marx, Giant, and others ceased their production.

Army Men fell in popularity in the late ‘60s for several reasons. The most prominent were cultural anti-war sentiments, and the invention of Action Figures.

Around the time of the fall of army men, hobby manufacturers had a secret plan. They worked behind the scenes with diligence to execute their plan. Soon, they produced their own versions of Army Men.

These were soft plastic soldiers, marketed to hobbyists as cheap scale figures. They were (and still are) sold in hobby stores, for hobby shop prices. These new figures saw marketing as “premium toy soldiers.”

This alone distinguished them from genuine army men, the common toy soldiers of our times.

In the early 1970s, British toy companies started selling their own toy soldiers.

The toy companies marketed their troops as affordable miniature toy soldiers, also known as scale models, instead of army men.

Thus, the influx of Airfix, Matchbox, and Timpo toy soldier figures arrived in the USA. These toy soldiers were more popular among serious hobbyists and toy soldier enthusiasts.

Those boxed figure sets were not available in traditional toy stores. Thus, their exclusivity and premium nature led to their soaring popularity.

The late 1970s saw another sharp decline in war toys, much to the dismay of toy soldier collectors. Several toy soldier manufacturers, like Marx, Ideal, and many more, went bankrupt.

Their departure from business left a void in the toy soldier market. While China continued to import knockoff bag-o-soldiers, their variety shrank. Many figures and poses vanished altogether.

In the late 1980s, hobby companies producing premium toy soldiers reduced production.

Some even ceased their production all together. Small knockoff companies copied their better figures and sold them in plastic bags.

That new generation of knock off toy soldiers are the most common kind of plastic army man today. They are smaller and less defined than the original figures.

But they are cheap and available in enormous quantities.

Conclusion – The Resurgence Of Army Men

Army Men and toy soldiers have seen a resurgence in recent years.

A fresh addition to the ranks of affordable army men are the cheap knockoffs of the premium British companies. Many new knockoff soldiers are clones of the original Airfix and Matchbox soldiers.

They are still sold in bags, plastic buckets, tubs, or even boxed play sets.

Sometimes, old American figures find their way back onto store shelves. Specialty companies own both the original molds and recasts of the classic Marx figures.

BMC Toys proudly sells recasts of the original Marx army men.

Thanks to companies like Victory Buy, we’ve seen the revival of American army men manufacturers.

For example, Processed Plastics, TimMee, BMC, and Marx toy soldiers have all returned to life because of Victory Buy.

Several new toy soldier companies have also risen to prominence in recent years. That includes Toy Soldier Central!

Some of these toy soldier companies also produce army men, which we all know and love.

Army Men have also been prominently featured in popular culture of recent years.

The 1991 release of Toy Story saw Woody command little green army men.

The 3DO Company produced several dozen video game titles featuring army men. Their war games featured army men of various colors, with the tag line of “Real Combat, Plastic Men.”

It’s safe to say, Army Men are making a comeback. We are entering the pinnacle of the modern Toy Soldier Renaissance. So grab a bag of little green plastic army men, and start playing war!

You’re not alone. I was also confused when my Agrax Earthshade was drying shiny.

Look at my humble toy soldiers, ruined by glossy Agrax Earthshade! I’m sure this happened to you too.

It turns out, our shiny agrax earthshade problems are caused by a mystery gunk that’s located in the bottom of our paint pots.

And after some research and experimentation, I’ve figured out the solution.

How To Fix Shiny Agrax Earthshade – First Method

Beware, there is a gloss variant of agrax earthshade! These methods only work on the standard variant.

• The first thing you need to do is make sure your pot of wash is the standard agrax earthshade.

• After that, open your paint pot, and insert a small stirring stick inside the pot. (The back of a paintbrush, or a pen, are fine substitutes.)

This next part is the most important, so pay attention!

• Use careful force to scoop and agitate the mystery gunk located in the bottom of the paint pot.

• Continue stirring this gunk until it’s all loose.

• Then finally, close up your paint pot, and SHAKE WHATCHUR MOMMA GAVE YA. (Or, hook it up into an automatic paint shaker.)

• After a few moments of furious shaking, say goodbye to your agrax wash that dries shiny!

Why Is My Agrax Earthshade Glossy?

We’ve all seen old pots of paint that dry up. The chemicals that make up “paint” will separate if they’re unused for too long.

Pigment powders, colored dyes, and matte additives all wind up separating over time.

This same principal applies to washes, like Agrax Earthshade.

The chemical responsible for preventing agrax earthshade from drying shiny is “matte medium.”

So, when that matte medium separates from the wash, you’re stuck with a glossy shade!

All that’s needed to fix agrax earthshade that dries glossy, is mixing the matte medium back into the wash.

After you’ve mixed the matte medium back into your wash, always make sure to shake your paint pot before you use it. That way, you won’t have to go gunk hunting ever again.

More About Matte Medium

Does “matte” Sound familiar? You might’ve heard of “matte” before!

Matte (or matt) is a dulling agent, that overrides a glossy or shiny appearance. Usually, miniature painters use “Matt Varnish” as a 2-for-1 tool when wrapping up their minis.

First, matte varnish acts as a protective seal around the miniature. This ensures your paint job looks beautiful, and stays chip free!

Second, matte varnish combats glossy or shiny appearances on your army men. It can even out-right eliminate a shine in its entirety from your miniature!

If you’re thinking about using matte varnish, you’ll be glad to know they come in a “mate varnish spray” or paint-on matte varnish varieties.

Which leads us to the 2nd method of fixing a glossy agrax earthshade…

How To Fix Glossy Agrax Earthshade – Second Method

The second best way of fighting against a glossy agrax wash is by using a matte varnish.

All you have to do is apply a thin layer or two of matte varnish on your shiny minatures, and they’ll be as dull as a rock. You could use a spray on matte varnish, like from the army painter, or a paint on varnish, like by Vallejo.

Easy huh?

Conclusion – Last Thoughts On Fixing Glossy Agrax Earthshade

Now, the best technique to prevent glossiness would be to use both my methods in combination.

If you wanna take a step further, you could also drop a few mixing balls into your pot of wash. But, the two methods I gave you here are good enough.

Welcome back to Toy Soldier Central, Commander! This article will give you 5 solid pieces of wargaming etiquette to become the kind of wargamer that everyone wants to play with!

You’ll also get a grasp on the kind of wargamers you’d probably wanna avoid.

I know just what to do, because I’ve spent hundreds of hours playing wargames in hobby stores all across the country.

Now, I have a list of grand commandments I’ll share with the world, so we can all maximize our wargaming experiences, and make our community a better place.

If you’ve read my first guide on wargaming etiquette, you’ll know the most important piece of advice is to be the hobby friend you wish you had.

But, much like wargaming, etiquette can be quite complex, and subtle details get overlooked all the time.

So then that means it’s time to familiarize yourself with another 5 solid pieces of wargaming etiquette that we didn’t talk about before!

1.) Play By The Rules

No matter where you are in life, we can all agree that there are few things worse than a cheater. This holds true across all facets of life – including wargaming.

If you find that you’re spending too much time and money by wargaming, and that bothers you, then I recommend cheating in every game you play!

Pretty soon, you’ll have no one left to play with, and you can finally quit the hobby!

(Please note, that was all sarcastic.)

Actually, cheating in games will instantly develop you an infamous reputation and get you vilified by your local wargaming community.

It’s one thing to forget a rule, or misinterpret information, or ask for a do-over straight up.

It’s a completely different thing to fudge your rolls, or hide your rolls, or move your pieces more forward than they actually should move.

The best way to handle cheating is by eliminating it entirely.

A good way to earn trust from the people you wargame with is by vocalizing what you’re rolling or measuring for.

Communicating your intentions on the battlefield allows your opponent to have a fair understanding of what’s happening in the game.

Plus, it’s no fun playing against a silent mannequin.

Another method to eliminate cheating is by allowing your opponent to see your dice rolls before you pick them back up.

I’ve heard stories of players rolling their dice, immediately picking them back up, then claiming they hit 24 different soldiers, out of 25 dice.

Yeah right!

So let your opponents view your dice rolls as a common courtesy, and politely insist upon the same, until mutual trust and camaraderie is built.

Both these methods eliminate cheating, and accusations of it.

2.) Stop Backseat Gaming

Have you ever driven someone and just had them nagging at you the entire car ride?

Just constant “You’re going too fast,” and “watch out! Break! Break!” or the more annoying “I wouldn’t be driving like this, let me drive.”

Get out of my car!! Woah. Flash backs.

It feels the exact same way when someone is being a backseat gamer.

Have you ever had someone sitting in the sidelines, being snide and snarky, telling you how “you shouldn’t do that,” or that “you shouldn’t move that unit there.”

Backseat wargaming is just as aggravating as touching people’s minis without asking first.

Hardly anyone even likes or listens to advice when they ask for it – what makes you think they’ll listen to your advice without even asking you for it?

If you give advice without being asked first, then just stop.

I don’t care how many times you’ve read Sun Tzu’s Art Of War. If people aren’t asking you for advice, then stop handing it out freely. Advice given freely is worthless.

If you’re dead set on being a mentor, then look for the newer wargamers, and play casual games. The chances are, they’ll ask for guidance and tips, thus giving you the chance to be the advisor you’re wishing to be.

But for the love of all things wargaming, please, never develop a “Demi-God of wargaming” complex.

There’s no need to rub a defeated opponent’s face in the dirt by saying things like “I was sure you were going to have me by turn 2, but you didn’t…”

Unless it’s a casual game, and you’re both laughing about how “Oh I woulda got you! I’m surprised you did X, and man that dice roll on turn 5 was so YZ!”

Which leads us to our next piece of advice.

3.) Stop Being A Rules Lawyer In Casual Games

So many of the most fun wargaming moments in my life happened because of allowing do-overs.

One time, my buddy’s champion was cornered, defeat for him was imminent.

And I had my army closing in on his champion from all sides.

But, he had one more roll to make – was he going to be able to dodge?

Then, he made his roll.

And it was a 2. Needless to say, he could not reach dodge, and he died.

But, we both agreed, that was an anti-climactic ending to an otherwise chaotic battle.

Then we also agreed on letting him make a do-over roll, just for the fun of the game.

And that turned that dull moment into an epic last stand, where his champion died fighting.

Who knows how many legendary moments wargamers have missed out on, just by being a rules lawyer?

In case you’re unsure about what a rules lawyer is, basically, they’re a stickler for the rules. They hold you letter bound to the contract of the game rules, don’t allow do-overs, and other white collar corporatism.

Or worse, they expect you to know every single rule in a 200 page rulebook. Every complex rule. Every obscure rule. Oh, and you’d better remember how all these rules interact with one another.

Trust me, even as a seasoned wargamer, I still forget rules and behaviors on occasion.

There’s few things more annoying than some person pulling a “HEY YOU’RE NOT ALLOWED TO DO THAT!” And then proceeding to flip out.

Sometimes, these guys allow you to fumble your plays, then pull out an uno reverse call. “Hah, GOTCHA!” Screams the rules lawyer, as he proceeds to ruin your whole day with some “gotcha moment” he had held up his sleeve…

In a casual game.

Seriously, who does that?

But man, those moments where a rules lawyer tries to call me out, and then the rulebook actually backs me up… those moments are so satisfying.

The next piece of advice is a reliable way to help you memorize your rules.

4.) Keep A Cheat Sheet

To ensure smooth gameplay as a new player, have your army list and breakdown ready in an easily readable format.

Map your units, including all their equipment, armor, powers, and special rules, onto a separate page—a “cheat” sheet, so to speak.

Record all the rules, preferably with page numbers that reference your most important statistics. This way, you can quickly reference the book when needed, such as to recall the “S of your boltgun” or the “A of your elite choice.”

Doing this will save time and be a relief for both you and your opponent.

Don’t forget to jot down essential information like what stage comes next, or who can roll two dice for a single attack. A perfect basic cheat sheet will look a lot like a “one pages rules” sheet. Note this information as well.

For instance, create a self-made cheat sheet page that includes details like “Unit 1 – 10 attacks with rapid fire. Drop Pod Unit 1 – Shoot storm bolter,” etc.

This way, you won’t miss any attacks or abilities during the game, preventing missed opportunities or surprises.

5.) Respect People’s Boundaries

Sometimes, it’s easy to forget that the people we interact with are actual human beings. What you find acceptable may be abhorrent to someone else.

Therefore, it’s always important to respect people’s boundaries.

Unfortunately, none of us are psykers, and we cannot read minds.

So that means that we usually are made aware of a person’s boundaries after we cross them.

But, this doesn’t give you a free pass to run around hurling insults at people!

It actually means: if someone is absolutely not cool with other people touching their minis, then just don’t grab them.

If someone in the hobby store is only interested in browsing, and doesn’t want to talk or play with you, then respect that and leave them be.

They’ll remember you as the person who respected them, and will be more open to you in the future, because you chose to not force yourself on them.

I hope these pillars of etiquette will improve your wargaming experience. Wargaming is an awesome hobby that’s been enjoyed by great authors, powerful generals, and everyday folks like ourselves.

The History Of The “Armies In Plastic” Company

Here’s a brief history of the A.I.P. company.

Armies In Plastic was established in 1998 by toy soldier enthusiast Anthony Ciccarello. Now, the business is maintained by Paul Ciccarello, who continues the business his father started. Armies In Plastic specializes in producing high-quality, historically accurate toy soldier figures. They offer a wide range of plastic army men, covering various historical eras and military conflicts. Their figures are always made of sturdy and durable plastic. Although the figures lack exceptional, luxury quality detail, they are still “better than okay.” Armies In Plastic is a prime example of a premium toy soldier brand.

Over the years, the company has gained a loyal following of toy soldier enthusiasts and collectors worldwide.

First Impressions Of The Toy Soldier Packaging

First things first, let’s talk about the box these army men come in.

The box itself is made of durable cardboard. It feels sturdy, and you can use it to secure your soldiers. The front of the box displays the Armies In Plastic logo. The box also shows off original concept sketches used for some of the poses in this pack.

The box also shows us specifics about this particular set of toy soldiers. My box says they’re Taliban toy soldiers representing the “Helmand Province.” There are 3 other provinces, making 4 in total. The only difference between the “provinces” is the color of the toy soldier’s plastic. Armies In Plastic continues the tradition of providing various color options for your toy soldiers in most of their army men sets.

This particular box comes with 18 figures, varying in 6 poses, all in 1:32 (54mm) scale.

General Overview Of Taliban Army Men By AIP

The Armies In Plastic Taliban box set comes with 3 plastic bags. Each baggy contains 6 soldiers, totaling to 18 soldiers. You can think of each bag as an independent squad, because every soldier in the bag utilizes a different pose.

The 6 poses you can expect are as follows:

One rocketeer, ready to launch his RPG.

One Commander, holding a handgun and AK-47.

One Soldier aiming his ak-47 while standing.

One Soldier aiming his ak-47 while crouching.

One Soldier advancing at a sprint’s pace.

One Soldier charging into battle, firing his AK-47 from the hip.

Each of these toy soldiers comes with varied details – which are all pretty good.

Keep in mind that Taliban themed toy soldiers are rare and hard to come by. These modern soldiers are hardly ever converted into miniature form. The only other toy soldier companies I know of that produce Taliban army men are Mars with their Taliban Warriors set, and ResinMunitorum from Etsy with their OPFOR set. Both sets are spectacular in their own right, and I own the Mars set.

As far as the variety, I was pretty satisfied with the poses of the figures. We’re getting 18 soldiers, with 6 poses, and 3 of each pose. The only thing that could have made this set better was if EVERY soldier used a different pose, but hey, a hobbyist can dream, right?

For those reasons, I give the variety and uniqueness a solid 8 out of 10.

Quality Level Of These Taliban Toy Soldiers

At first glance, you can tell these toy soldiers are something special. And that’s what I expect from a premium toy soldier company. Each soldier has individual details ranging from subtle to complex. All those qualities add up to make a marvelous toy soldier.

Every molding line and crease makes sense on the figures, and brings out the characteristics of their equipment and uniforms. You can even see the toes in the sandals on some of these miniatures!

You also get some slight variance in the general appearance of the army men in each squad. Some of the soldiers are sporting turbans, while other soldiers are using Taqiyyas. Some soldiers are wearing a robe and pants, while others are also wearing a vest over their robe. Some soldiers have more creases on their robes than others.

You get the idea – every squad member has a distinct look.

Upon closer inspection, you can even see the buttons near the robe collar, and on the ammo pouches. That’s incredible attention to detail!

The faces are also crafted with the beginning stages of intricate detail. Remember, they aren’t luxury miniatures, but they’re still pretty good. Every miniature has a well formed nose, prominent cheekbones, lips that fit the scale, and divots for their eyes.

Now, I have to say something about these toy soldiers. The miniatures are simple. They have a weapon, a face, some equipment, hair, headwear… and that’s about it.

And I wouldn’t want it any other way!

Their simplicity is historically accurate, and adds to the charm of these miniatures. It’s the perfect medium between Tim Mee’s straightforward soldiers, and the complicated miniatures of Games Workshop.

Finally, the bases of each of these toy soldiers all come pre-textured with a sort of sandy and desert theme. They have rough patches, humps and bumps, which you can convert into a marvelous base.

Additionally, each base is wide and firm – you’ll have no problem standing these soldiers up. The bottom of each base is also stamped with “Armies In Plastic” branding. That stamp has no effect on the toy soldier’s standing ability.

Unfortunately, no toy soldiers are without downsides.

Upon closer inspection of these soldiers, you can find subtle plastic flashing lines. They usually run right down the middle of the figure, from the top of the head, all the way down to the left and right sides of the arms. Don’t worry though, you can clean the plastic flashing by using a hobby knife and some patience.

These plastic flashing lines are obvious on some figures. You can almost imagine how both halves of the toy soldier were molded together to make the full figure.

If these artifacts touch the mini’s nose, it will unfortunately cause a slight deformity. Also, the soldiers have the classic plastic toy soldier molding circle pin mark on their backs, and other places on their bodies. Sometimes it looks a bit ugly.

But, like the plastic flashing, you can remedy this with a hobby knife and a little bit of green stuff to fill in the cracks.

Some of these toy soldiers have unfortunate flatness in their beards. It’s like they had trouble texturing this soldier’s sideburns. But hey, at least the rest of the beard is bushy!

A few of my soldiers also had some chipping on their eyebrows. I can’t say if this is true for every Taliban toy soldier set, but that’s what I got with mine.

I have to say this: I was grasping at straws with these negatives, because these minis are wonderful.

Back to the bright side of these miniatures – the unpainted figures look great right out of the box, flaws and all. But, I know from experience that when they change from unpainted to painted toy soldiers, they jump to life.

But here’s a brief recap to save you some time. Premium toy soldier companies produce high quality soldiers, and are usually more costly as a result. However, they aren’t at the quality and cost level of luxury toy soldier brands.

But, Armies In Plastic stands out as a diamond among premium toy soldier brands.

This box set, and many others like it, are sold for bargain prices ranging between 10$ and 18$. For that small cost, you get 18 well detailed, one of a kind toy soldiers from the modern Era.

This price summary is so short because you can’t beat the value you get from these toy soldiers at that price. Because of that, Armies In Plastic earns a solid 10 out of 10 in the pricing category with this army men set.

My Personal Opinion On Armies In Plastic Taliban Army Men

These figures are something I adore. I have nostalgic feelings for these toy soldiers. When I was a young hobbyist, I was so used to playing with Chinese knock-off army men from the dollar store.

That all changed when one day, I was doing my daily curiosity-fueled search for “plastic army men” on eBay.

I scrolled and scrolled until I stumbled upon some toy soldiers more unique than anything else I’ve yet seen!

I begged my dad to buy me a box, and I painted them up instantly, then sold them for 5 times what my dad paid for them.

I love every set from Armies In Plastic. Especially their modern toy soldiers! But, this set holds a special place in my heart, and I give this box set a solid 10 out of 10 on my personal score.
